Education is Our Foundation
By Andrea Conner, Trustee

The ADDC Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization, formed in 1987 by the Association of Desk and Derrick Clubs. The purpose of the foundation is to assist the Association, the Association members and others in the energy industries in developing educational projects and programs. So, where do the funds come from to accomplish this goal? From Desk and Derrick members, Desk and Derrick clubs, energy industry employers, individuals and foundations interested in supporting education. One example of a supporter is Nickles Energy. They donate $1000 each year to the ADDC Foundation through the Energy Person of the Year Award. This award is presented each year to a fellow American and Canadian Desk and Derrick member.

What are some educational projects that the ADDC Foundation has supported? Seminars or Workshops provided at Region meetings; Certification programs, such as Basics of Petroleum Geology or COPAS, that are presented at ADDC conventions; Educational Publications such as the
Bit of Fun Energy Activity Book, Fundamentals of Petroleum textbooks, and materials and textbooks used for oilfield training; Symposiums, such as "Meeting Energy Needs in the 21st Century - Are We There Yet", which are presented at ADDC conventions.

The ADDC Foundation has also purchased educational videos/DVDs and video and DVD players that are available through the ADDC Lending Library. They have supported videotaping various seminars/classes associated with the PETEX correspondence course
Fundamentals of Petroleum, which is based on the ADDC sponsored textbook and available through the library as well. Other projects supported by the ADDC Foundation are "Oil and Gas: The Molecular Story" a curriculum unit developed by the National Foundation for Energy Education. Also supported is work related to PetroMolly. PetroMolly, a popular character, was created by Desk and Derrick members to teach school children and others about the many useful objects made from petroleum and petrochemicals.

The ADDC Foundation has also funded community outreach projects through ADDC and the energy industry to create awareness of the role and value of energy in our daily lives.

As you can see, the ADDC Foundation plays a very important part in educating each Desk and Derrick member as well as fellow energy industry individuals.
